General tips:

  • Potential conflict of interest? Report this!

  • Read carefully, pay attention.

  • Treat the text like you want someone else to treat your text.

  • Be fair and objective.

  • The given argumentation might not agree with the existing literature. Don't dismiss it too quickly! There might be some good points in there, keep an open mind while reviewing.

  • Be specific; give arguments that accompany comments. Provide suggestions for improval as much as possible.

  • Pay attention to grammar and unclear writing.

  • Pay attention to the structure of the text.

  • Ethics: keep in mind that this text is property of the author, even though the person is unknown to you. Any presumed abuse and plagiarism will be investigated thoroughly!

  • Research question: is it new? Topic timely/appropriate? Has it been defined precisely enough for this assignment?

  • In case of a larger text, the best approach is to scan the text first generally, paying attention to the larger picture and structure. Then read it again and add comments on more specific details.

  • Are the used references recent and to the point?
