FAQ

Frequently asked questions on PeerRevYOU

Q: What format files can I upload?

A: Supported filetypes are .doc and docx.

Q: Can I see who I’m reviewing? And can I see who reviewed me?

A: No. PeerRevYOU works with a double-blind system. This means, instead of a name, you’ll be seeing a number. We believe this will add to a more honest and constructive review. Furthermore, you won’t be able to tell the writer’s age, gender or ethnicity.

Q: I am a Philosophy student at the UvA and I would really like to participate. Is that possible?

A: Unfortunately, at the moment PeerRevYOU is only accessible to UvA students from the Media courses. Since PeerRevYOU is a new startup, it comes with the small hickups any startup has. We would first like to straighten out all those bumps in the road before expanding to different disciplines and faculties. But don’t worry, we’re coming soon, to a faculty near you!

Q: Is it possible to get my assignment peer reviewed by multiple people?

A: No. Our system is based on a one-to-one algorithm. If you would want to receive multiple peer reviews on your assignment, it would mean that you would have to review multiple assignments as well. To keep feedback on even lowbrow assignment quick and of good quality, the system assigns everyone only one assignment to review in order to receive just the one feedback.

Q: Does PeerRevYOU also serve as a plagiarism-prevention service?

A: No. After reviewing someone else and receiving back your own reviewed assignments, you can still make some adjustments. Only then will you hand in your assignment to the teacher. From here on, things take its natural course. The assignment will still go through Ephorus, the plagiarism-prevention tool used by the UvA. So like normally, if you’ve (accidentally) plagiarized original texts, this is the point where this will come to light. In case a student plagiarises another student while or after peer reviewing another assignment, this too will appear clear in Ephorus. By using the abuse function on our platform, you can send a request to the admins of PeerRevYOU. One look in the backend of PeerRevYOU will tell who plagiarised who. The UvA then can decide to take further steps.

Q: What if I’ve written a review within the time limit, but the person who reviewed me renounced to do so?

A: Unfortunately, as the platform works on a voluntary basis, we can not guarantee this will never happen. When one doesn’t fulfill his obligation to review someone else, they won’t receive their own review either. This means there was no point in handing in their work in the first place.
Apart from working on a trust basis, when uploading a document, you have to agree to our Terms and conditions. In those, it becomes clear that when you fail to write a review in the time given, this can lead to a temporary or definite ban from the platform.

Q: Will I be able to give feedback on the review?

A: Yes. After receiving your peer review, you’ll be asked to rate its quality and usefulness in 5 different categories. This will help our algorithm make better matches over time.

Q: I made adjustments based on the peer review I received and the teacher only graded me a 6!

A: First of all, this is not really a question. But to reply to your discontent, the option to have your assignment peer reviewed serves as a bonus tool. The contents of the assignment you end up handing in to your teacher, will remain your responsibility. This means we at PeerRevYOU or your peer reviewer is not responsible for detecting plagiarism or incorrect contents. Rather, the reviewer looks for aspects such as grammar, spelling, structure and layout.
